Second Shooting in Steamboat Springs

One of the most fun things about this summer was second-shooting for other photographer friends, and having them shoot with me! Back in September I had the pleasure of second shooting Stephanie and Nathan’s beautiful Steamboat Springs wedding with Michele Hart Photography. This venue – the Perry Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp – was breathtaking, and Stephanie and Nathan’s vintage details with turquoise accents were personal and so creative. Of course I’m just a huge fan of Steamboat in general – Curtis and I lived under Mount Werner for a too-short year early in our relationship. To photograph a wedding there was a wonderful experience for me. A huge thanks to Michele for taking me along for the ride!

Kerrianne and Matt ~ Part 2: Ceremony and Family

My favorite part of every wedding. The ceremony. Celebrating with your family. This one just happened to be at the top of a winding road overlooking the valley and volcanoes. I mean… wow. And the way the sun came out to hit them at the end of their ceremony? Best first kiss picture ever!!! Plus an amazing sunset? Unforgettable.

Kerrianne and Matt in Antigua, Guatemala – Part 1

Good things happen to good people. Great things happen to great people. Case in point: Kerrianne and Matt.

Kerrianne and I have been friends for the last 10 or so years, pretty much since I moved to Denver. A first grade teacher, Kerrianne took the summer of 2007 to travel to Guatemala and volunteer for an amazing organization – Safe Passage/Camino Seguro – to teach children who live near the Guatemala City dump. While in Guatemala, Kerrianne was reacquainted with Matt, whom she had known back when they were both in college in the Carolinas. Matt owns and operates Old Town Outfitters - a mountain biking/hiking/adventure outfitter – in the absolutely stunning town of Antigua, Guatemala. Long story short, it was love. The forever kind. After a seaside engagement at a surf camp on Guatemala’s Pacific coast, Kerrianne left Denver for a new life in Antigua with Matt. We all miss her dearly. But you know that wonderfully peaceful, happy feeling you get when you see your friends deliriously happy? We all have that too.

I was so honored when Kerrianne and Matt asked me to photograph their wedding in Antigua. This isn’t the Caribbean Antigua either… Antigua, Guatemala is famous for its old Spanish architecture and colonial period ruins. It sits underneath three volcanoes at a mile above sea level. It is a place of stunning beauty and kind, friendly people. Kerrianne and Matt’s families and friends gathered there to ring in 2013 with a New Year’s Eve wedding – and it was a celebration none of us will soon forget!

Mini-Session Winners of the Spring Drawing!

I was so excited when I drew Amy’s name as the winner of my first Facebook drawing. I’ve known Amy since she was 12 or so when she and my sister became friends in middle school. Shannon and Amy worked at Vail for a winter together, and when Shannon left for NC, Amy stayed to live the ski town life. Good thing, because she met her husband Eric at a date auction (a date auction!!) a couple of years later. Like us, they are settled in suburban Denver with their pup Lily, escaping to the mountains whenever possible. We met up at Chautauqua Park in Boulder last month right before sunset to snap some family pictures. One of the photography skills I’m working on is working high ISOs… It was getting dark fast for this session, and I had to crank my ISO to keep my shutter speed fast enough for Lily! I absolutely love how the higher ISOs give a grain and richness to the photograph. May be finding myself in low light more often on purpose:) Thanks you two!! Looking forward to hut trips and beers with you in the near future!

Ground Above Zero Publicity Photoshoot

Remember Ground Above Zero from my first music photoshoot? I’m so glad they liked their pictures, because I got to shoot again with them, this time a portrait session for publicity, posters, and web sites.

This photoshoot was awesome, and really inspired me to change the way I approach the art direction of each shoot. My friend Jenn (wife of Andrew the guitarist and the band’s art director-extraordinare) and I developed a theme that played off the name of the band – Ground Above Zero – and the built environment around Denver’s Commons Park. I am thrilled with the results, and I hope Heather, Tim, Josh, Andrew, and Kelly are too.

Ground Above Zero is heading into the studio to start recording new music for 2013… but first you can catch them at Moe’s on December 7 for the Yerkish Return Show. Congrats on a great year you guys!
